The boxer primers we are familiar with have self contained anvils within the Primer. The difference from Berdan primers is that the anvil is an integral part of the cartridge case. However some early cartridges used percussion caps inserted where the primers would go. In order to fire, they needed an anvil incorporated for the firing pin to push the primer compound against. Separate anvils were sold to be inserted into the percussion caps.
