In the 1860's, governments around the world were in a race to equip their armies with the new faster loading breech loading arms. The easiest way was to convert muzzle loading muskets to breech loaders. Some countries found it easier to adopt and manufacture totally new breech loaders. The French model 1853 Tabatiere musket was bypassed for conversion for military use, but an enterprising manufacturer bought up the surplus muskets and converted them to breech loading shot guns. Many of these were sold by American mail order houses in the 1890's. They are still floating around and show up at gun shows.
